chatty cathy 20" (big sister) reproduction 1960-1964 talking doll in original box with reproduction outfit 1998 (does not talk) AUD$90.00
Mattel originally produced Chatty Cathy "the Talking Doll" in 1960-1964. She was the first talking doll hit who had a pull string mechanism and said phrases such as "please brush my hair". She captured the hearts of an entire generation of little girls. Every original Chatty Cathy doll had a subtle difference, so they were highly collectible.
Mattel has reissued her twice since then, once in 1969 and again in 1998-1999 for collectors.
This particular doll is the 1998 version and has on the back of her neck the following:
Chatty Cathy comes in her original box with her original tagged dress, original shoe horn and original wrist hang tag.
She is made of vinyl. Her face, arms and legs are made of the same vinyl material but her stomach seems to be like a hard plastic.
Chatty Cathy dolls have such an endearing face with those big eyes and the sprinkling of freckles across her nose and under her eyes.
Her cute face has blue - violet (rare?) open and shut eyes, freckles across the bridge of her nose and thick shoulder length rooted blonde hair which you can brush. The hair has an appearance of having two colours in it.
She has a pull string in her back and a voice box at her front. Her string is intact, pulls out ok but takes a fair bit of enticing to go back in. You have to shake her to get the string back in and then you can hear a bit of garbled speech.
Her voice box is not working.
Her head, arms and legs can be moved to different positions.
The back of one legs has a couple of scratch abrasions, and is told for accuracy and does not detract from her at all.
She is able to stand and sit without any assistance and presents very well and is quite a heavy doll - very well made.
She has the most adorable cute little face.
Her original box has some rips to it, but is still very colourful.
