deluxe reading dolls 1955 - 1973
- Deluxe Reading sold their dolls and toys under a number of different company names; Deluxe, Deluxe Reading, Deluxe Premium Corp, Deluxe Topper, Deluxe Toy Creations, Topper Toys and Topper Corp.
- They are probably best known for the Dawn doll series by Topper Toys. Deluxe Reading dolls were sold in the 1955 to 1973 through supermarket's and are often referred to as Grocery Store Dolls. They were a cheaper alternative to department store dolls, although of similar quality during the late 1950's. These dolls were the "average" girls imitation of the more expensive Revlon type dolls. Amazingly they have endured for nearly 60 years and are becoming more collectible with time and rarity.

Rosemary is a doll made by Deluxe Reading who made a series of these dolls. They were known as: Sweet Rosemary, Cinderella, Beautiful Gail, Darling Debbie and Betty the Beautiful Bride.
Sweet Rosemary is gorgeous and very tall. She has short blonde hair and blue open and shut eyes. Original blush to both cheeks, original eyelashes to both eyes and a closed red mouth. Her lips and fingernails are perfectly painted and her complexion is peaches and cream.
She has a one piece body that was made of something new...it was called "miracle skin". This skin was an attempt to imitate human skin. Her head is a medium soft vinyl and her hair is saran rooted which can be washed.
Rosemary's head can be moved into different positions.
She comes with her original pink ruffled nylon long evening dress which has silver thread in the lace ruffels, pink velvet cummerbund, long pink and silver thread evening gloves, and those rare high heels with the diamante silver buckle.
She does not come with her jewellery and comes with the rare pink bag.
She also has her rare original instruction booklet with her.
Things to be told for honesty and accuracy:
. one shoe has been broken and reglued in the past
. some of the glue has gone onto the underneath of one foot
Her very rare original box is in great condition and still retains its old tape. It is over 50 years old and the fact that the box has survived all these years is amazing.
Sweet Rosemary looks like she has never been played with and has spent most of her 50 so years in her box!
These dolls are prized by collectors today for their lavish costuming. The dolls generally come with well-made dresses of organdy or satin, with layers of ruffles and netting. Accents are often in velvet, metallics or fake fur, jewelry. The dresses have often survived in good condition.
This doll also comes in its RARE ORIGINAL BOX and is a great find for the doll collector of baby boomer dolls.

Our rare doll is called ''Cinderella'', and she is dressed in her beautiful pink ruffled ball gown with a shimmery gold bodice, and comes in her rare original box.
Have a look at the quality of the workmanship of the gown. The material is just gorgeous.

Deluxe made quite a few of these type of gorgeous large dolls all named differently and dressed with a different high quality outfit. It is actually very hard to determine which doll it is without the original outfit.
To have the original box, doll in original clothes and the original little pamphlet is indeed rare and give provenance to the doll.
Now you have the chance to own a piece of doll history.

.have not tried to put the doll in a sitting position
.shoes have stretched elastic and have put a clear rubber band on each shoe to keep the shoes on the doll. Hard to see the band as it is clear - see photos
.the lid has been cut off by the previous owner, and I have put tape on it to make it back into a hinged lid.

Tickles is in her original box with her original clothing and shoes and she still works!!!!!
She is a large baby doll - 53cm tall. She has the date of 1963 on her neck along with the wording "Deluxe Reading" 11.
Many of the 1960 dolls were made to do something, and were battery operated. Tickles requires 1 size D battery.
Tickles was made to cry and call for her mummy, and laugh. These two functions are operated by two different buttons. The one on her side is to make her laugh, and the one in her back to make her cry. She still does these things however her voice has become a little scratchy over time and sometimes you need to press the lever a couple of times to make her work. Still amazing to think she is operating at all.
Tickles has:
. rooted blonde white hair
. open and shut blue eyes
. original eyelashes to both eyes
. head, arms and legs can be moved to different positions
. battery cover at the back of her
She comes in her original outfit which is a pale green thin cotton type fabric with matching panties. Her dress has a white bib with 3 different coloured ducks appliqued on it. On her feet are her original nylon socks and green Cinderella type shoes.
Her original box has some rips, old tapes and writing "Cindy" on the side of the bottom box. The graphics are still quite bright and colourful.
